Gothic Beauty
One of Minnesota's Twin Cities' best kept death
metal secrets is the band Demonicon; but now that area has to share this
band with the rest of the world - and about time. On their second album,
Bloodlust, Demonicon's musicianship and talent is much more polished and
professional than some other bands who have been kicking out albums for
years. Horror and aggression are their prime motivators. The former is
seen in the lyrics, although delivered by standard growl that most vox
in the genre uses. The hints of spoken word parts are vocally much better.
The aggression is in the music itself: loud, relentless, with masterful
precision. They clearly saved the best for last with a departure - an atmospheric
acoustic-sounding piece that sounds nothing like the rest of the album.

The Wake
Twin Cities-based Demonicon has released a killer
death metal album with Bloodlust. The band has moved forward from 2001’s
Condemned Creation in technical ability, song writing, and most certainly
on vocals. The band melds technical proficiency and brutality. Brandon
Almendinger’s vocals are the highlight of the album for me. He conveys
an amazing amount of force, and though his vocals are truly flesh-shredding,
the lyrics are still understandable. Guitarists Brian Owens and Anthony
Columbus (formerly of Anal Blast) put forth blazing performances with some
highly intricate and hyper speed leads. Though Demonicon maintains blazing
speed throughout the album they are able to create interesting, sometimes
bizarre song structures, somewhat reminiscent of Cryptopsy. Highlights
are album opener “Heretic,” “Drafting the Phalanx” and the surprisingly
calm outro “Cathartic Self-Destruction.” While Condemned Creation was good,
Bloodlust truly made me take notice of Demonicon, and it should garner
them major attention in the metal community. Demonicon has proven itself
a force to be reckoned with. Readers should check out Demonicon at www.demonicon.net.

DEMONICON consists of five gents from Minneapolis.
They’ve left hard rock and heavy metal behind (although not image-wise).
The band are in the genre of death with grinding drums if you ask me. A
variety of metal that often gets a tad monotonous an that is also the case
of DEMONICON. Halfway through the album song titles matters not one bit
anymore. Perhaps it’s also so that “Convoke the Drones” features more boringly
grinding drums than any other track. This is not a poor performance, it’s
just a bit hard to muster. |
